Students who choose the individualized study method are assigned qualified tutors. Your tutor will assist you throughout the course, either by phone, e-mail or your course website. Individualized study tutors offer subject-matter assistance, engage in scholarly discussion, mark assignments, provide feedback, and help you prepare for exams.
You can call your tutor, toll-free, from anywhere in Canada or the US during established tutor hours, or you can leave a voice-mail or e-mail message at any time which your tutor will respond to within 2 business days. Students residing outside Canada or the US should communicate with their tutor electronically; if they choose to communicate by telephone it will be at the student’s expense.
Athabasca University Faculty of Business courses provide access to a Student Support Centre and academic experts rather than individual tutors. When you register in an individualized study Faculty of Business course that uses the Student Support Centre model, you will receive a letter with the Student Support Centre's toll-free telephone number before your course start date.

AU individualized-study tutors are committed to helping you learn at a distance. After you register in an individualized-study course, and before your course start date, you will receive a letter containing your tutor’s name, email address, phone number, and tutoring hours. There are two methods that this information will be made available to you. If you request a printed letter, the letter will be sent via regular post. If you choose the e-letter option, you will not receive a printed tutor letter. You will access these letters online through the myAU student portal. If you don’t receive your tutor letter one week before your course start date or if you have misplaced it, contact Learning Services Tutorial (email: firstname.lastname@example.org) as soon as possible.
AU has a commitment to offer year-round registration in individualized study courses. As a result, there may be times when a tutor is unavailable due to illness, vacation or statutory holidays. The University and individual tutors endeavour to inform students of planned absences in sufficient time for students to accommodate such temporary unavailability into their study schedule. There may be some situations in which your tutor will not be available but this would be for 10 business days or less. When absences of longer than 10 business days are necessary, alternate arrangements will be made for you.
